چکیده

Any deviation in ambient temperature causes stress and disturbs the cellular homeostasis in the organisms. In the present study, genotoxicity induced by exposure of high temperature (40o, 45o and 50oC) has been analyzed in the third instar larvae of common housefly, Musca domestica, by using chromosome aberration assay, micronucleus assay and mitotic index as cytological end points. The adverse effects of heat stress on development pattern of housefly were also observed. A significant (p<0.05, p<0.01 and p<0.001) increase in chromosome aberrations and micronucleus frequency was observed in all the exposed groups as compared to control. Cell proliferation at 50oC is inhibited as represented by a decrease in mitotic index. The development pattern in exposed larvae shows increase in larval mortality and delay in adult emergence. The results suggest that heat stress induces structural chromosome aberrations, micronuclei and affects development pattern in housefly Musca domestica.

First report of the house fly larvae, Musca domestica (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) associated with the monkey carcass in Malaysia.

A study on insect succession of monkey carcass in a forested area in Ulu Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia was conducted from 9 May to 18 June 2007. The third instar of the housefly, Musca domestica (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) were only found on dry stage of a decomposed (Day-33) monkey carcass (Macaca fascicularis Raffles). This observation revealed that M. domestica maggots were found together wi...

Spatial Genetic Variation in House Fly Populations, Musca Domestica (diptera : Muscidae)

Spatial genetic variation was assessed in the common house fly Musca domestica. Allozymes at three gene enzyme system unraveled ten loci which revealed seventeen alleles in house fly populations. F statistics revealed that except ACPH-1 and EST-3 all the other loci show inbreeding (Fis>Fst). Persistent heterozygosity was observed in ACPH-1(Fis= -0.140) which indicate random mating for this locus.

Effects of eucalyptol on house fly (Diptera: Muscidae) and blow fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

The effects of eucalyptol were evaluated against the house fly, Musca domestica L., and blow fly, Chrysomya megacephala (F.). The bioassay of adults, using topical application, indicated that M. domestica males were more susceptible than females, with the LD50 being 118 and 177 microg/fly, respectively. A higher LD50 of C. megacephala was obtained; 197 microg/fly for males and 221 microg/fly fo...

Some ultrastructural superficial changes in house fly (Diptera: Muscidae) and blow fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae induced by eucalyptol oil.

The ultrastructural superficial changes in third instar house fly (Musca domestica) and blow fly (Chrysomya megacephala) induced by eucalyptol oil were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Dipped in 0.902 g/ml eucalyptol for 30 sec, the larvae integument of both species showed significant aberrant appearance of the body surface, particularly swelling integument, bleb formation, partial ...

Temporal Variation among Populations of House Fly Musca Domestica (diptera: Muscidae)

Three natural populations of house fly Musca domestica were analyzed for eight genetic loci by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Allozyme analysis at eight loci scores nineteen putative alleles. The amount of mean observed heterozygosity (Ho) was greater for Varanasi population than the other two populations studied. Nei’s genetic identity (I) and distance (D) values reveal th...
